Lost Girls of Sudan (2)

April 29, 2008

I am getting some responses from my women friends on where to make this book go.  Very different from the Lost Boys I am helping.  Wondering where I am going with this.  I am contacting my friend and webmaster in Syracuse, New York (these young ladies live in Rochester).  Maybe I can put them in touch with some professional women who can help them locally.

Lost Girls of Sudan.

April 27, 2008

You never know where the road will take you.  That is what I keep saying and sometimes I still wonder.  Much about the Lost Boys is in the media, but little about Lost Girls.  Well, one of the guys I am helping has a friend who is a Lost Girl.  She contacted me and asked for help with a book.

I am honored to help.  I am just shaking my head at where the path is taking me.

I Can Make the Meetings!

April 27, 2008

I am no longer scheduled for Saturdays, so I got to attend todays meeting.  Judy Duarte was the speaker and she taught us about building characters.  Extremely useful workshop.  Of course, I did it the hard way and wrote the book first LOL!

It was great to see everyone!

I have had so many hits on my blog because of this, I thought I should turn this into at least a story. Any comments on how to do this are more than welcome and when it gets published I will think of a great prize for you. (Now THERE is incentive)!:-)

Maybe Freud as detective? Then again, supposedly he cannot fathom the Irish (a case he cannot solve)?

Dear Readers, let me know what you think!

I met with Peter last Friday and will meet with him again this Friday.  I am helping him narrow down what he would like to put together.  I am still waiting to see the stuff from Jok, the other gentleman in on this.

I am also doing a speech for the International Speech Contest in Toastmasters about this.  I won my club contest and the Area Contest (Areas represent 3-5 Clubs).  Next is Division on May 3rd.

The book is growing though.  This is a good thing and will really make it educational to Americans.

Barack Obama and Chicago

April 16, 2008

U.S. News and World Report had an article about Barack Obama with some complaining about his playing political hardball on certain issues.

What did you expect?  He learned politics in Chicago.  Politics in Chicago is a contact sport, like the Bears, Black Hawks and Bulls.

Only the tough survive.

The speech was given in May of 2004 to an NAACP awards dinner.  I read about it in the latest Atlantic Monthly.

I have always liked Bill Cosby as a comedian and a person.  The speech does not resonate just for African Americans (which I am not) but for all people.  It is called responsibility.

I expect to be held accountable.

It was interesting to see it.  You do not think of Kazakh culture much.  That day, Professor Taylor was teaching about the Turksib Railway the Soviet government built and the famines from driving nomads to be collective farmers.  You can thank Uncle Joe Stalin for that one.

Branding Barack Obama

April 14, 2008

I picked up a magazine called Fast Company in Borders last Thursday.  What caught my eye was the cover story by Ellen McGirt entitled The Brand Called Obama.

I am both fascinated and bothered by the idea of branding the candidates.  Obama ends up not having to have to really say anything substantial.  Young people will support him just because he is different.  (I would vote for Bill Richardson without any qualms but what do I know)?;-)

Ms McGirt stated that the generation called millennials will outnumber baby boomers in the next couple of years.  I felt like the old guy missing the boat.

Mrs. Clinton’s brand seems to be the hard driving businesswoman.  So hard driving businesswomen, policy wonks and political junkies will vote for her.  I am curious.  What is McCain’s brand?;-)

Yerbie Was Not Happy

April 10, 2008

What does this have to do with the conference?  Jack, the friend living with us was taking care of the cats and Yerbie is my cat.  Jack told a story that had me in stitches.

Saturday morning, when we were at the conference, Jack heard Yerbie yelling in the bedroom.  Jack went to investigate, and there was my little buddy at the foot of the bed yelling at it, as though we were going to magically pop out of the mattress.

For my writing colleagues, Yerbie does occasionally sit and watch.  He is still trying to figure out how the paper comes out of the printer.
